BEHIND THE LENS - December 19 2006 -

Football Stars For Tomorrow - www.storkmontgomery.com

The Championship
Giving it away
Recruiting - one minute it's hot, the next it's not

This it it. This will be the last "From Behind The Lens" for 2006.

It has been a great year; I have three topics, so let's roll.

The Championship
I dressed as Jolly ole Saint Nick for the Championship. Yes, I was in a full Santa costume from head to toe.

Watching the game from high above the stadium brought a lot of joy to my heart. I thought about all the great moments that have happened through out the year as the Bulldogs did what they do best. They were on a collision course for the 5-A State Crown.

I will admit there were times I had my doubts. I still think in order to win big games you must have played in others in order to be prepared. When we beat Riverdale, I truly thought we were on our way to victory lane.

The adrenaline rush at the end of the game when you win something like that is a one time thing. It’s like winning a new car or being crowned sales person of the year. You are so worked up you can’t talk.

Santa did deliver after the game as I had the only available copy for Coach Shadowens. Guess what? He had been a good boy.

Giving it away
Well now that you won the championship, how do you pay for the rings?

Football is the most expensive sport to play. Helmets are 174.00, Shoulder Pads run from 225.00 all the way to 300.00. It takes a lot of cash to protect a kid on Friday Night. To run the electricity for the lights, the grass seed it took last spring, the water it takes to make the field look nice. Folks all those bills are due today.

Even me, my camera cost a lot of money. I have it insured in case in falls off the press box. To film a game the blank tapes are 7.00 a piece. (It takes two to cut a game) The broadcast video blank is 2.00 the plastic cover is 2.00. The VCR I use is not from Wal-Mart.

I feel like a fisherman who fills up his boat with 3.00 a gallon gasoline to run up and down the river to catch a fish. You don’t do it to make money. You do it to give it away and make a difference. The hours I spend helping kids is countless. You give your time, your knowledge and part of your cash to be a part of something great that money can’t buy. I think folks loose sight of the reason why we are here. God put us here and God gave us what we have. He can snap his fingers and take it away. He gives us those things to see what we do with our skill set. Remember life is a test.

BTW (By The Way) Each Ring cost a little over 300.00 a piece from what I have been told. I am cutting copies of the championship game, giving them to the school to help raise money for those who can’t afford a ring.

Recruiting - one minute it's hot, the next it's not
Golden Tate is going to play for the Golden Dome (Notre Dame). What an athlete they got. When a player like him commits to college, it rocks the 5 other schools who thought they had a chance to get him. Now the other schools are forced to look else where.

The colleges are required by NCAA rules to take a break through Christmas. Some call it "quiet time" or "dead period". Winning your bowl game can sway a decision.
If a college gets blown out in their particular bowl game, you will see decisions that were once welded shut be changed. Kids like to be a part of a winning program.

Colleges will be recruiting during the "quiet time", but it’s not face to face, it's done on the field. A college can sway a lot of kids by winning and creating a vision on TV that is the place to go to school. It is a wonderful time of the year, but we still have a ton of recruiting left on the plate.

PS: I will be reporting from the road the next time I write, so stay tuned as we pack up the equipment and head out. I will take some pictures and upload them as we bring it all to you.

That's A Wrap
I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I have truly been blessed. Santa gave me memories that nobody can steal and I captured them all "From Behind The Lens".

Thanks to all of you who read this rag and I will see you in 2007.

God Bless and Take Care

BEHIND THE LENS - December 1 2006 -

Football Stars For Tomorrow - www.storkmontgomery.com

The Ride!
Performing when it counts!
Ravenwood

This it it! The Big One !

Do you remember that I mentioned at one time that we are on a collision course for the 5-A State Championship? How Sweet it is.

The Ride!
This has been fun but exhausting at the same time. For those of you who have been so happy and so nervous at the same time you know exactly what I am talking about. We are less than 33 hours from playing the game and 36 hours from knowing how this will all end.

My life has been a roller coaster, trying to manage my personal side, my job side, and riding the wave. It's times like these that certain things just don’t get done or there are never enough hours in the day, much less energy.

God has blessed me as I ponder back to the first game of the season against La Vergne. I have pushed record so many times to capture each play of every game and now the biggest one of all is in front of me. I have watched these kids play football since they were 8 and 9 years old.

I used to think "Wow, we are playing for the Mid State Youth Football Championship". I was nervous then but I am bonkers now. When you beat a Riverdale or Ooltewah and get home after the game, you can’t sleep. You can’t eat, your nerves are bouncing all over the place.

I am excited for everybody who has had the joy of watching this moment in history take place. There are only two rides that are bigger than this. Playing for a National Championship on the college ride and playing for a National title on the NFL ride.

Special thanks go out to all of you who have taken your time to call me, to email me, and to just stop and say congrats. You have waited for this one and it is here.

Yes, I believe.

Performing when it counts
The cliché "Big time players make Big time plays" is correct in so many ways.

I like this one better "Everybody performed when it counted from top to bottom".

A big time play can never happen unless all the other parts are working together. The last second shot of basketball is usually done off of a crisp pass or a sweet pick. Performing when it counts is not for the novice, it is for all those who train hard for the big day. Success is usually preceded by buckets of sweat. You are not going to be perfect every game or every contest, but when the lights are brighter than they have ever been the most experienced athletes and people always get it done.

If you stop and think about your job the best people you work with or know usually perform best when the pressure is on. I love it when the pressure is on at work. I may not catch the long pass or every pitch, but I love to grind it out consistently and successfully on all the other ones.

The bottom line is work to make yourself better each and everyday so that when they do put the lights on you bright it is rewarding.

Ravenwood
We played this team earlier in the year and I don’t think we had a light on in the house. We showed up, but did not play to our level of experience.

This game has a lot of attention. The web servers that host the message boards have been busy. Ravenwood has beaten us twice in two meetings. They beat us last year in regular season and handed us our lunch this year in regular season. These teams are evenly matched.

I work in Franklin and drive through Ravenwood country everyday. Signs are sticking in the yards bearing the bird with the red and black colors. I was at the dog pound early this morning only to view a lot of purple and gold.

This is it, the big one. I don’t have to tell you what my pick is or what I feel. I am like the kids who just can’t wait to perform. This one is televised state wide on Fox stations. The flag ship for Rutherford County sports will be on hand to give the Bulldog angle

1450 AM - Ravenwood vs Smyrna <- Click to Listen LIVE

If you want my last link www.coacht.com will be doing play by play and game-cast. The kick off is slated for 7pm CST. I would say by 9:30 pm tomorrow night we will know the results.

Thanks to all who have followed us and watched this ride take place.

GO BULLDOGS !!!!

That's A Wrap
In closing, for those of you who will attend the cold game tomorrow night I will be in rare form. So just look to the top of the press box I guarantee you can’t miss me.

Special thanks go out to my brother Sam for running the website. He never stops at keeping up with all the articles, emails, web stats you name it, he does it.

Don't Panic
Nashvile Storm Update
Coach Donnie Carter's Last Game
Riverdale

Hey Gang! We are still winning, but we have a huge one tonight.

I have some great topics, so let's jump in and get going.

Don't Panic
Don’t panic still a ton of recruiting to be done.  The final time to take the ACT prior to National Signing Day has already happened.  The final time for kids GPA to be pulled prior to National Signing Day is 2Q.  National Signing Day is 2/7/07.

A lot of kids will not qualify in order to sign on that day.  You as a recruit or a parent must understand the colleges are under a lot of pressure.  College Football is all about the money.  They will not recruit borderline prospects.

I know there are a bunch of what I call tier 2 recruits who are worried but are qualified.  Hang tight we have a ways to go.

Nashville Storm Update
The Storm did not win the big one, as they lost to the Dallas Express 24-19.

I enjoyed calling their games and have heard from several players that will be back for another shot at Disney World.  They have a good chance. I look forward to being a part of the whole scene.  Storm, I will see you in June or late May.

Coach Donnie Carter's Last Game
The following story link is a great article written by David Boclair of the Daily News Journal regarding 30 years of coaching Donnie Carter.

Click Here to to read article.

Riverdale
The biggest game of the year is tonight at 7:00 p.m. Central Standard Time.

1450 AM - Smyrna @ Riverdale <- Click to Listen LIVE

We are headed to the reservation.  Yes, our hopes and dreams ended last year at the reservation. Their stadium is a very intimidating place to play.  The weather is not going to be warm like it was last Friday Night.

Can we win?  Yes, anything can happen.  The Bulldogs can't make many mistakes.  They must execute extremely well.  I predict it to be close.

I wish the team all the best.  I have watched a lot of them play since they were 7 and 8 years old.  Win, Lose or Draw a huge piece of my football life will die when 2006 comes to an end.  I know something else new will also be born that will run its course in 2007.

That's A Wrap
Well, that's a wrap.

As always, tonight I will high above the press box taking it all in.

If you see me just give a shout.

The Storm
Youth Football & Coach Donnie Carter
Playoffs - La Vergne @ Home

What a glorious day here in Tennessee. The weather is hitting 73, it's just great!

Ok, enough of that, I have 3 great topics, so let's roll.

The Storm
Congrats to the Nashville Storm they are playing in Orlando tomorrow and I hope the best for them. They are in the National Championship for Amateur Football. The league is known as the NAFL.
Many praises to Patrick Abernathy for letting me announce and film for the Storm.
I wish I could be in Disney with the team but I am spread a little thin this weekend.
I think a big championship ring would look good on my finger.

Youth Football & Coach Donnie Carter
Tomorrow is also the championship for the TYFA and I have been contacted to be the announcer for those games.

I cut my teeth in youth and learned a lot back in the DAY-O about football. I have six games all back to back starting at 9:00 and the last game kicks off at 7:30.

It will also be the game for Coach Donnie Carter. He has coached 12 year old kids since 1969. He has over 300 wins and several championships. A part of me will die tomorrow as Coach Carter hangs it up. He can take 5 plays and 11 disciplined kids and just beat you like a drum. 42 cross-buck on one and everybody block.

On behalf of all the kids who ever played for you "Thanks Coach".

Playoffs - La Vergne @ Home
Well tonight is the second round and we are still alive.

LaVergne will come over to the dog pound for this one.

The message boards have been busy, but we will settle it on the field.

I like our chances.

That's A Wrap
Well, that's a wrap.

As always, tonight I will high above the press box taking it all in.

If you see me just give a shout.

Rising to the Moment
I want to be a Star
Coffe County

Did you enjoy Halloween ?

It's Friday Night in Tennessee and we are ready for some playoff time action !

Rising to the Moment
The season starts all over tonight. If you lose its over, If you win, you get to come back the following Friday Night and play some more.

There are kids out there that are just like the people in your office or work place. You put the light directly on them and they literally rise to the moment. They are aggressive individuals that take control and make things happen. You give them a normal walk thru the park exercise and they will do it. But not like when the band is playing, the crowd is roaring, and the lights are shining.

When you have practiced hard, and are really prepared for this moment, you love it. When I am given a project at work that have timelines that are aggressive, there is no room for error. I like it. I tend to deliver. Why? It's all about the show.

I want to be a Star
There are a lot of kids that stand on sideline and they want so badly to be a Star. I know a lot of lineman that want to be a star. Last night, the University of Louisville beat West Virginia up and down the field. They played great defense, and really came to play. The end of the game resulted in goal post being brought to the ground and fans rushing the field to jump on the Cardinal.

They also interviewed Brian Brohm. Click HERE for Brian Brohm Profile He was the star of the show. He played great. They did not find a lineman, or a kicker, they usually go for the Quarterback or the Running back for the interview. Quarterbacks and Running Backs take the risk that comes along with the position they play, no different than the CEO of a company. They can also get the headaches of the light shined right on them daily. A lot of people just can't handle it.

Coffee County
We take on the Raiders tonight.

Of course, Jake Nunley who graced our website back in 2003 and ran for over 4,000 career yards, hails from this school.

I am looking forward to tonight. I hope that those of you who are close, come out to watch. It has been a ride. We will see who gets a ticket to come back next week and dance again.

That's A Wrap
Well, that's a wrap.

I hope to see you at the game, be sure and dress warm, it's going to be cold.

Senior Night
Marsalous Johnson #31
Playoffs

Hey Gang! Is it cold enough for you ?

Yes, it is football weather, so let's jump in and get going.

Senior Night
It is here, the final regular season home game for those seniors who have given it their all in football. Parents will stand behind their kid and be proud that each one of their own has played the game.

To some across this land, it is their last game period. I told everybody that the season will fly by.

The Smyrna High School Bulldogs, which is the school that I film for is 7-2, so the season has flown by. Remember when you win it rolls by quickly. When you are loosing it feels like you are pushing a car uphill.

Marsalous Johnson #31
Coach Fulmer, coach of the Tennessee Volunteers said that Marsalous would be one of the deep return men for the Vols tomorrow night.

We send out a huge good luck and we are proud of you.

Go Vols !!!

Playoffs
We have a lot on the line tonight as Smyrna takes on Lebanon.

This will decide whether we host a home game or not.

It is the difference between the #2 spot and #3.

That's A Wrap
I have been so swamped at work and it has jerked the life out of me.

I usually get this way toward the end of each football season.

Good Luck to the Dogs.

Thanks for dropping by and if you see me at the game give a shout.

A whole lot of recruiting left
Coaches Coach and Players Play
The Chop is headed to the Pound!

Stork, what is up and where in the world have you ben ??????

Sorry for the dely. Work, Football and being a dad, have drained my batteries.

Enough of the complaining and excuses, let's jump in and talk about football.

A whole lot of recruiting left
Everybody starts to get nervous about this time of the year when it comes to recruiting.

I rarely get worried or nervous about the subject. There are way too many days left and a lot of football left to play. In November, there are a lot of coaches that will be leaving either by choice or by performance. That will change the recruiting environment and philosophy for each college program.
There is a list of kids that will not pass the ACT or SAT. There is a list of kids who will become tired of playing the game and just want to do something else. If I knew what was going to happen I would tell you but I don’t. I do know this; colleges change their minds on what they need everyday. When kids change their minds, the college then has to adjust and recruit to their needs.

Please be patient kids and parents, we still have a lot of time to worry. (I don’t know why you worry to begin with its not going to change the outcome one bit) If I knew that the man who worries the most wins, then I would know a lot of people that would not be the losers they are. Get it!!!!!!!!

Coaches Coach and Players Play
Why we play the big games and what fuels the athlete.

Coaches who love to coach, enjoy the rush it gives them of strategically moving the players into position to score or stop their opponent. Coaching is a mind game. Yes, it has a little to do with the rah rah speech before the big game, but when you cut through it all the coach loves to execute the X’ s and O’s of the game.

A trick play is not designed to make the fans go crazy when it works. The play is designed to fool the opponent and hopefully pick up huge yardage or even score. The going crazy part happens when it works that is Uncle MO working. Players Play because of the rush it gives them doing their job and dominating each play.

We as adults do the same. Companies draw up certain sales proposals to get the business and sales people execute the plan. Scoring a touchdown or making a huge defensive play that turns the game around is just as exciting when you take the sale away from the competition. It rocks the blood.

The Chop is headed to the Pound!
Ok, everybody knows this is the game. The spear comes to the pound.

Riverdale is still Riverdale.

They have changed their offense, they run a spread wing T. I don’t care if they run the stack eye, the 5wide spread or the option it is still Riverdale.

This is going to be a great game. It will not be a blow out; I think it will roll right down to the buzzer. We have talked about it since last year; it has had more cellular minute’s gabbed wireless than any other game up this point in Rutherford County. It is going to be crazy.

The best part for me is that I will be capturing it all on video. I love to film these games, it is what we as videographers live for. The link is attached below for anybody who would like to listen. Enough about it the game kicks off at 7:30 central standard time.

1450 AM Go Inside Sports - Riverdale @ Smyrna <- Listen LIVE

That's A Wrap
I just wanted to say thanks to all the emails and calls I get.

You the people are what keep me going when things are busy. I am sorry I have not been able to write a new article these past weeks, it is tough to keep it all going.

This website, the internet and email has allowed me to have some wonderful relationships. This website has helped a lot of kids further their education and given them the opportunity to chase dreams.

God has blessed me by letting this site exist. Thanks again to all of you for the positive support you give.

Enough for this week, I will be high above the press box tonight with the best view in the house (which is behind the lens). When you arrive at the game give a shout and we will see what happens tonight between the Warriors and the Bulldogs

BEHIND THE LENS - September 1 2006 -

Football Stars For Tomorrow - www.storkmontgomery.com

Winning vs. Losing - the difference
Passing through one time
Machine Status vs. Collision Course?

We are all planning for a long weekend that is much needed, so why wait?

Let's get into some football and life.

Winning vs Losing - the difference
Why do carry our defeats around in a bag and never savor the wins like we should?

If your team wins a high school championship or beats that cross town rival, it better happen every year.
We bask in the glory for 10 or 20 hours and say “We better be in position to win the game or win the championship.". If we lose, we remember every second, every minute. The pain we felt at school, or work, I mean we pack it around for days, weeks and years.

Let me give you an example; Ask any Kentucky Basketball fan what was the worse day in UK basketball history, and it is not the day Rick Pitino left (That was my saddest day). Almost all of them would say it was the day Christian Laettner tickled the twine on a last second shot to beat the CATS back in 1992 when Kentucky played Duke. Click here to re-live that moment in time.

I know the reservation (Riverdale) lost last week, but I would hate to think what it feels like for Blackman. Blackman has not won a game since 2004. Riverdale will remember the win they took last week against McCallie and move forward from that win, they will survive , and so will the fans.

We always remember the loss, and that hurt feeling more than the joy of winning.
Think about it for a minute, it happens in everything, not just football.

Passing through one time
As life continues to change, we must remember we are all just passing through one time.

We will only be 16 years old one time. We will only be in high school one time. We will only see certain parts of the world one time. Certain tragic events will only happen one time.

Kids don’t get that when they are in high school.  They get up and go to school. They dread doing homework and taking out the trash. They even dread going to practice some days. They really don’t look at things they way you and I do. When you are fast approaching 40 years old (That’ Me I am 39), it is hard to explain to them that the guys you are playing football with or any sport for that matter, will never be a group again.

The moment on the field only happens once. Anybody that is been around me has heard the 10 games, 40 quarters, 48 minutes 2880 seconds in regular season football. I mean take a look at game 3 tonight for us. When kids play this game on Friday night or when your child participates in any high school sport, please help them understand they only get to do it one time, and then it is over.

When they get older in life, that is when it will become clear that they are just passing through.

Maschine Status vs. Collision
Course?

Are we Machine Status?

Are we on Collision Course for high school championship?

I must say I am having a ball. Everybody that knows me well understands that I am nuts about this Smyrna High School Football team. These guys have been playing football since the DAY-O.

I tell people all the time the story about how my son was asked to play football by the famous Gene Carr “The Godfather of Youth Football”. I have watched, filmed, announced, almost all of this years squad at least once when they played youth football. It has been such a wonderful ride, but it is rolling fast.

The radio announcers for the zone 104.5 The Zone tonight will start discussing who is at Machine Status. The show starts around 9:15 and they web cast so you can listen from all over the world.

I love to hear Murphy Fair run down of all the scores and highlights. Coaches who talk winning and plan to win usually do. If you go back and listen to radio coaches shows of winners they stress winning, they live to win.

One of my favorite coaches is Howard Schnellenberger

Why? He believed he was going to win all the time, here is his bio:

Birth name
Howard Leslie Schnellenberger

Trade mark
His mustache.

Trivia
Football coach.

Assistant coach for the University of Kentucky (1959-60), University of Alabama (1961-65), Los Angeles Rams (1966-69) and Miami Dolphins (1970-72, 1975-78). Head coach for the Baltimore Colts (1973-74), University of Miami (1979-83), University of Louisville (1985-94), University of Oklahoma (1995) and Florida Atlantic University (2001-present). He also is the athletic director of FAU. In addition, Schnellenberger accepted an offer to coach an unnamed Orlando team in the United States Football league but the team folded before playing a game.

Started the football program at Florida Atlantic University.

Assistant coach of the University of Alabama's 1961, 1964 and 1965 national championship teams. Assistant coach of the Miami Dolphins' 1972 Super Bowl championship team - the only undefeated team in the National Football League since that league began using playoffs to determine its champion. Head coach of the University of Miami's national championship team.

Upon accepted the head coaching position at the University of Oklahoma, he boldly predicted that movies would be made and books written about the triumphs ahead. The team's media guide in Schnellenberger debut season at UO - 1995 - was 396 pages long and was mailed in boxes rather than envelopes. But the Sooners finished the season 5-5-1, their worst record in 30 years, and Schnellenberger resigned shortly afterward under intense pressure to do so.

Met his wife, Beverlee Donnelly, when he played for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League and she was a cheerleader for that team.

Personal quotes
"We're on a collision course with the national championship."
(He makes this statement about every school he coaches.)
http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/sports/15385932.htm
Even just recently in the link above you will see where Howard once again is referenced he is on a collision course to win the national championship.

In the words of Coach Schnellenberger I want to be the first to say:

“Smyrna is on collision course for the 5A championship”

That's A Wrap
I have bored you enough; we travel to Wilson Central tonight for a 7:30 kick off.

This weekend I am heading to Leitchfield Kentucky, my hometown, for my 20th high school reunion,
Grayson County High School, home of the fighting Cougars. The old orange and blue, high school friends from the past have been emailing all week, it ought to be fun and memorable.

Thanks, and give a shout or a wave if you see me at the game.

Until next week...God Bless and Take Care

BEHIND THE LENS - August 25 2006 -

Football Stars For Tomorrow - www.storkmontgomery.com

Give it your best!

Focus on what affects YOU

Cramping and the "Electrolyte"

Hey Gang Welcome back!

Here we are at Week 1 of High School Football in TN.

Yes, I know we played last week with what they call “Week 0”. Now it is fully underway, as all the teams across this long state are playing tonight.

Why wait around dive in? Let’s go!

Give it your best!
You are not going to win every game. You are not going to score every time you get the ball. Things are not always going to go your way, but if you give it your best shot things seem to feel better when you miss.

I announced the freshmen game last night between Smyrna and Brentwood. I've got to be honest and tell you that I made some mistakes on some of the kid’s names. It bugs me when the roster numbers and names don’t match up with what we have on the field. It makes me look like a fool. I also had a terrible time with some of the kid’s names. No announcer ever intentionally wants to butcher a child’s name. I like it when the parents come to the press box and in a calm voice tell me that “53 is Doug Sims not John Doe”. My reply works for me, "I can’t see from the press box to field what child is wearing each jersey, so I go by a list.". Calling a Football game is so different than basketball; you have a lot more players, and a lot more to watch.

Go easy on every body tonight: from the parking attendants, the gate people, the concession stand worker, the managers, the refs, the clock keeper, the coaches, the cheerleaders, and the players.

Give it your best, and if you make a mistake let it go and move on.

Focus on what affects YOU
You can’t control others and you can’t control this ever changing world. I think kids at times have way to much pressure put on them.

You would think kids are running America, and they do sometimes when they forget something at home, and they need you to bring something to them at school. The sky is always falling when that happens.

We put a lot responsibility on our kids, and at times they try to take on more than what really pertains to them. Parents need to make sure that they focus on what they need to, and make sure their kids focus on what their needs are.

If you are in 10th grade, focus on being in 10th grade and having fun. You don’t need to worry about how to fix the broken dryer at home. At times I wish kids would look at their parents and say "I am doing all I can to be a kid and enjoy life.".

Cramping and the "Electrolyte"
I was trying to figure out why last week during the game that some players cramp worse than others?

I had a long discussion with my mom about this topic. (Even though my mom owns and operates a florist, she worked in medicine prior to the flower business. She still keeps up her education, just in case she wants to work in that field again.)

Mom’s are always right, she explained that everybody’s body is different in chemistry. We each eat different, we weigh different, and most all we are made different. The body needs “Electrolytes” in order to function. We all burn energy in a different way, and when we do, those “Electrolytes” must return to the body in order for us to live.

You can put those back in so many different ways. Drinking Gatorade etc. , but it gets crazy when you are releasing more “Electrolytes” than you are replacing, The body can shut down. Therefore you cramp up. So what can you do? I found something on the internet that I will share with you in a minute, but the best thing is to take in many different forms of Potassium and Sodium prior to an event that you know will cause you to put your body in this state. When you get low on “Electrolytes” and you drink Gatorade, it is going to take a lot more than you can probably put down in order to recover so you can play more in the game.

The big boys (NFL) they bust out the IV and it is an immediate replacing technique. If you eat bananas and other fruit and vegetables that are high in potassium and sodium this will help late in your event, because they have slow release of replenishing those ever needed electrolytes. Example: If today I started eating bananas and oranges etc. around 3:00 for a 7:30 kick off, late in the game those bananas and oranges would kick in.

Below is some medical jargon I robbed off the internet.

Electrolyte is a "medical/scientific" term for salts, specifically ions. The term electrolyte means that this ion is electrically-charged and moves to either a negative (cathode) or positive (anode) electrode:

ions that move to the cathode (cations) are positively charged
ions that move to the anode (anions) are negatively charged

For example, your body fluids -- blood, plasma, interstitial fluid (fluid between cells) -- are like seawater and have a high concentration of sodium chloride (table salt, or NaCl). The electrolytes in sodium chloride are:

sodium ion (Na+) - cation
chloride ion (Cl-) - anion

As for your body, the major electrolytes are as follows:

sodium (Na+)
potassium (K+)
chloride (Cl-)
calcium (Ca2+)
magnesium (Mg2+)
bicarbonate (HCO3-)
phosphate (PO42-)
sulfate (SO42-)

Electrolytes are important because they are what your cells (especially nerve, heart, muscle) use to maintain voltages across their cell membranes and to carry electrical impulses (nerve impulses, muscle contractions) across themselves and to other cells. Your kidneys work to keep the electrolyte concentrations in your blood constant despite changes in your body. For example, when you exercise heavily, you lose electrolytes in your sweat, particularly sodium and potassium. These electrolytes must be replaced to keep the electrolyte concentrations of your body fluids constant. So, many sports drinks have sodium chloride or potassium chloride added to them. They also have sugar and flavorings to provide your body with extra energy and to make the drink taste better.

That's A Wrap
Well I have bored you enough.

Congrats to the Bulldogs on their first win last week against La Vergne.

We travel to Brentwood tonight to the high dollar school of Middle Tennessee. Game kick off slated for 7:30.

Thanks, and give a shout or a wave if you see me at the game.

Until next week...God Bless and Take Care

Cross Town Rival

Destruction of Property

Jitters

It is a wonderful day in Middle TN, and we are about 6 hours away from punching our ticket to the 2006 football season.
Like it or not, the time has come to buckle up the helmets and crack some plastic.

Cross Town Rival
Every community has them, and they exist in all sports. The team you must beat regardless of talent either squad has. I have heard it all, from siblings who played in these, all the way to parents who went head to head years ago and now their sons will battle it out for bragging rights until the next meeting.

The rival that was big in my time was the Edmonson County Wildcats versus the my Grayson County Cougars. They called it the Famous Tobacco Bowl. We played for a tobacco stick colored in each teams dominant color for keeps until next year. The games were always close and it was usually the first game of the season.

Wow, the irony is we play La Vergne tonight, our cross town rival and it is game 1.

PS: We are not playing for a tobacco stick.

Destruction of Property
I never will understand why people destroy things - Vandals damage high school ball fields.
I understand the rival part, but the destruction of property has no relationship to the game.

Edmonson County once shot a shotgun at our bus on the way home, and another year they put a dead skunk on the bus while we played. If you play a sport or you are a fan of the game, please email me and explain to me the relationship of destroying property. storkmontgomery@earthlink.net

I guess it is like destroying friendships, marriages, and families. When you really get to the person who is the catalyst for starting the whole thing their reason or purpose has no substance. In the end it just causes bitterness.

Jitters
Players have them

Announcers have them

Coaches have them.

Moms, Dads and Fans have them

Lights Camera Action

Tonight’s contest between cross town rival Lavergne and Smryna is on CSS. I have received several text messages from the players and they are so excited about this game. Both of these squads are loaded and this game is going to be a knock down drag out until the buzzer sounds.

I have jitters also, I have a son who is playing in the game and I want to catch all the plays, good or bad, on film. Once the ride starts tonight the grind begins.
I am so ready for this year to get going, I have been giddy about the kids getting to play on TV. This maybe the only time that some of them ever get on TV unless they do something stupid like the paragraph before touches on.

That's A Wrap
Thanks, and give a shout or a wave if you see me at the game.

Until next week...God Bless and Take Care

Combine Trail Comes To An End

What Is It All About?

Hey Gang,
Well I told you I would report on the combines. I am sorry for the delay but I have been busy with both work and being a single parent.

Combine Trail Comes To An End
We did it !!! We covered over a 1,000 miles in two different vans and a total of 9 different young men got to show out their skill set.

We attended the MSL Combine in Atlanta and the Scout Combine in Louisville. The kids had a ball and I truly owe the man upstairs a big thanks. I also want to send out a big thanks to the parents who let them go as well as those who pitched in a few dollars to make sure the kids had a great time.

I took on a huge amount of responsibility and the kids respected my leadership and I appreciate that very much.

What's It All About?
A combine whether it be NFL or high school is simply a test to measure your body and speed. The kids that are real fast love to get timed in the forty, the linemen hate it. The big show is all about the one on one drills.

Kids wait all day until they get that chance to play a little football without pads. A wide receiver just can’t wait to put the moves on a defensive back. A quarterback loves to put the ball in the receiver’s hands. The linemen love to push and shove and attack the tackling dummy used too represents the quarterback.

Is it the end of the world if you don’t do well in a combine? No but it is a good wake up call to say “get to work, you only have 60 days and we will be getting ready for the fall” June will be here a week from today and then we will be about 60 days from two a days. The combine is a good measure for college coaches to get a look at what’s available.

Life is about changes, since the last game of football was played at the college or high school level a lot has changed. They have issues just like high school coaches do. Some kids get stronger, some get slower, some get smarter and some grow taller. Kids in high school change that is what makes high school sports fun the kids are growing.

When you get to college you mature or learn not to put your hand on the stove the second time, but in high school all kids change their ideas from minute to minute to minute it so hard to keep them focused on the sweet spot in life.

That's A Wrap
Well that is wrap.

Once again thanks to all. I hope the kids that traveled those miles remember the fun we had for a long time. I had a wonderful time and I am glad that I was able to do it. Big thanks to everybody who made it happen and we will do it again next year.

Thanks for dropping in and we will be back next week.

God Bless

Spring Practice

Shake Ups

Combine Tour

Hey Gang,
Well you are probably wondering what happened to me??? A LOT! I have been real busy trying to be a single parent. I hope all of you are having a wonderful spring let’s jump in and get going.

Spring Practice
The coaches were ready to blow the air through the whistles and see what the kids have been doing all winter. Spring Practice is here and the coaches are trying to get a glimpse at what they may look like this fall.
You have some coaches who are rebuilding, some who are adding on and some who are already stacked. The object is to execute what you can and just try to hopefully be ready for the one scrimmage you get in the spring?
We have Lincoln County tomorrow in our backyard it will be interesting to see what we have.

Shake Ups
Yes, Gary Rankin has left region 4-5A and he took with it a lot of success and stories that people will be telling for years to come. The best part is Maryville High School will play Alcoa and that will be the game. Rankin vs. Quarles both have been coach of the year, both have a jewelry box full of rings.
It will be interesting this fall when these two schools lock horns.

Combine Tour
We will be traveling to Atlanta and Louisville for this year’s combine tour. I have several guys already up and on the site and more to come.

That's A Wrap
Well that is wrap.

Thanks everybody for your support.

I will be getting you updates on how well our guys do, until then God Bless and Take Care

PS: The TAFL championship is the Saturday Night in LaVergne and with the police arriving at last Saturday night’s games it was out of control. Good Luck to those two who made it The Snakes vs. the Limestone Lightening.

Until next week.
